Book Summary

From the world of Eric Carle, an all-time favorite book to be read aloud, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, tells the tale of a caterpillar whose eyes are bigger than his stomach. During his day, he eats way too much food, causing him to not feel very well. In the end, the caterpillar wraps himself in a cocoon and the reader is treated to a surprise at the end.

Activity 1: Classifying Food Choices

Directions: The hungry caterpillar eats a lot of different foods, some of which were not healthy for him. Decide whether the foods below are healthy or unhealthy foods for you to eat. Cut out each picture and glue them to the correct side of the chart.

Activity 2: Lifecycle of a Butterfly

Directions: The hungry caterpillar changed into a beautiful butterfly at the end of the story. Identify the correct lifecycle of the butterfly in the chart below. Cut out the 4 stages of the butterfly’s lifecycle, and glue them in the correct order on the chart.

Activity 3: Color Sort

Directions: The hungry caterpillar ate colorful fruits on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Cut out the pictures of colorful foods below and glue them to the matching color on the rainbow.

Activity 4: Counting Fruit

Directions: The hungry caterpillar showed you the how many fruits he ate throughout the week. Count the number of fruits he ate each day and write the number in the box on the right.

Activity 5: Creative Writing Prompt

Directions: The very hungry caterpillar changed into a beautiful butterfly. Write your own story about a beautiful butterfly on the lines below. Draw a picture in the box to go along with your story.
